Kentucky Stuns South Carolina With Second-Half Rally

No matter whether it's from booze or football wins over the No. 1 team in the country, hangovers always hurt. South Carolina is definitely feeling the pain after losing to Kentucky Saturday night, 31-28. The Wildcats rallied from a 28-10 halftime deficit as current quarterback Mike Hartline connected with wide-open former quarterback Randall Cobb on a broken play, 24-yard scoring pass with 1:15 left in the game.

South Carolina's last-ditch rally fell short as it elected for an end-zone fade pass with 11 second remaining rather than a game-tying field goal. The throw was into single coverage but the defensive back was able to deflect it into the hands of a trailing teammate for the interception to end the game.

The Gamecocks were missing standout freshman back Marcus Lattimore for much of the second half. Lattimore shredded the Wildcat defense in the early going, totaling 212 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game with an injury. The Gamecocks had 369 yards at halftime and appeared to be on their way to a blowout victory. But everyone's worst suspicions were confirmed with the second half collapse.

With Kentucky star tailback Derrick Locke also sidelined before the game, both quarterbacks shouldered the offensive load in setting career-high totals for passing yards. South Carolina's Stephen Garcia passed for 382 yards with two touchdowns against two interceptions while Kentucky's Hartline threw for 349 of his own with four touchdowns against zero interceptions. He will likely be up for several player-of-the-week honors after a strong second half.
