Notre Dame Receivers: All Hands on Deck Needed Against Navy

In the parlance of Brian Kelly's offense, the four receiver positions are termed W, X, Y, and Z. The recent spate of injuries amongst the Notre Dame skill positions, however, calls to mind another set of letters for Saturday's game versus Navy: MIA.

At least two, and possibly all four, of quarterback Dayne Crist's favorite targets will be missing in action when the Fighting Irish line up against the Midshipmen at Meadowlands Stadium at noon. Tight end -- or Y receiver -- Kyle Rudolph, who has 28 catches, underwent season-ending hamstring surgery last Friday. Slot or Z receiver Theo Riddick (38 catches), suffered a high ankle sprain in last Saturday's 44-20 win over Western Michigan.

"It doesn't look like it will need surgery," said Kelly at his weekly Tuesday press conference, "but this is something that's going to take some time for it to heal."

Expect Riddick, a sophomore, to return no earlier than the Nov. 13th date versus Utah.

The down-and-out pattern does not end there. Wide receiver Michael Floyd, who leads the Irish with 44 catches, will not practice this week due to a bothersome hamstring injury. "We'll rest him this week relative to practice," said Kelly, "but we are going to dress him for Saturday and see where he is."
