It lost its head coach, its all-everything quarterback Dan LeFevour, its top two receivers, its starting running back and it was breaking in a new coaching staff and a learning a slightly new system.
But no one could have predicted the fall from grace the defending Mid-American Conference champion has taken through eight games this year.
The Chippewas are 2-6, their worst start since 2001, and are currently at the bottom of the MAC West standings.
It's unfamiliar territory for a team that has won three of the past four MAC titles.
"My assessment isn't very good when you're 2-6," coach Dan Enos said. "We haven't been able to win the close games we've been in and I can attribute it to pretty much a lot of collective things. But basically, we haven't been able to make plays in critical games and our opponents have been able to do that.
"It's been a little something each game."
