After jumping out to a three-touchdown lead in the first quarter, one would've expected a much easier day for East Carolina against North Carolina State. Instead, the Pirates offense slumbered, the Wolfpack offense exploded in the second quarter and ECU needed a field goal with just over a minute remaining to force overtime. A Dominique Davis 1-yard run in overtime was the first lead ECU had since the first quarter, but it was the most important one, as the Pirates squeezed out a 33-27 victory to move to 4-2 on the year.Along with the key rushing touchdown, Davis had 376 yards passing, with two throwing touchdowns. Lance Lewis had eight receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown, while freshman wide receiver Justin Jones had one catch on the day, a 3-yard catch to end the first-quarter scoring spree.
Giavanni Ruffin had 15 carries for 74 yards while Jonathan Williams had 11 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown for the Pirates.
Meanwhile, N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 322 yards and a touchdown, but had three interceptions. He also ran for 37 yards and a touchdown. Dean Hayes had 36 yards rushing and a touchdown and Mustafa Greene ran for 75 yards.
The loss moves NC State to 5-2 with a tough game against Florida State on tap. East Carolina will host Marshall next weekend.
