Former Florida QB Kerwin Bell Has Raised Jacksonville's Profile
Filed under: FCS

It's a question Kerwin Bell hears endlessly. Do you want to coach football at a larger college? It's an answer Bell gives repeatedly. Bell can't say he wouldn't want to, but he loves the players he has recruited, he loves to build programs and compete, and he'd love to win championships - at Jacksonville University, on the banks of the St. Johns River, in north Florida.
Yes, that Jacksonville University.
"Nobody knew about us, no one really cared about coming and visiting us," Bell told FanHouse.
Well, they do now.
Bell, the former record-setting quarterback from the University of Florida, has dramatically changed the culture within Jacksonville's program since his arrival in 2007.
Bell, 45, has the Dolphins ranked in the top 25 for the first time in history in the Fathead.com/Sports Network media poll that recognizes Division I Football Championship Subdivision teams. JU is looking to win its second Pioneer Football League title in three years and earn a qualifying berth in the FCS playoffs for the first time in history.

It lost its head coach, its all-everything quarterback Dan LeFevour, its top two receivers, its starting running back and it was breaking in a new coaching staff and a learning a slightly new system.
But no one could have predicted the fall from grace the defending Mid-American Conference champion has taken through eight games this year.
The Chippewas are 2-6, their worst start since 2001, and are currently at the bottom of the MAC West standings.
It's unfamiliar territory for a team that has won three of the past four MAC titles.
"My assessment isn't very good when you're 2-6," coach Dan Enos said. "We haven't been able to win the close games we've been in and I can attribute it to pretty much a lot of collective things. But basically, we haven't been able to make plays in critical games and our opponents have been able to do that.
"It's been a little something each game."

Missouri Takes Significant Step With Upset Of BCS No. 1 Oklahoma
Filed under: Missouri, Oklahoma, Big 12

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Thumbing through the Gary Pinkel years at Missouri, there is a lot of high achievement for a program that had lost its way much of the 1990s.
You have a string of bowl games, a couple double-digit winning seasons and -- most significantly -- a sustained presence toward the top of the Big 12 North Division. Still, that signature that puts the rest of the nation on notice that you are indeed a power program had been conspicuously missing from the Tigers' resume.
Missouri finally broke through Saturday night, standing toe-to-toe against the newly crowned BCS No.1 Oklahoma during a showdown of undefeated Big 12 schools at Faurot Stadium. After all of the ups-and-downs of a college football game had been realized, the No. 11 Tigers walked away with a 36-27 upset of an Oklahoma team that was named the nation's top team in last week's first BCS poll.
"This isn't the national championship, certainly, but it's a big for a our football program, it's big for a lot of reasons," said Pinkel, who led Missouri to its first win over a No.1 ranked team. "I had refused to talk about how big this win would be leading up to the game. The bottom line is you have to do it. You can talk about it forever, but you have to do it and we did it.
"Hopefully that will give us a lot of confidence as we continue the season."

Miami Coach Randy Shannon Is in the Pressure Cooker
Filed under: University of Miami, UNC

Disregard Saturday's 33-10 victory over North Carolina. This goes deeper than one game. This is about fourth-year coach Randy Shannon and the direction of the program.
"I think Randy does a solid job," said Morgan, who played at UM from 1997-2000 and had Shannon as his linebackers coach for the first three years. "But I question sometimes whether he's head coaching material."
Morgan, who handles pre-game analysis on UM radio broadcasts, isn't alone in that line of thought.
"I think a lot of guys feel the same way I do," said Morgan, who had a seven-year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers. "I talk to a lot of alumni. The majority of people I talk to I don't think they're sure where the program is headed under Randy Shannon."

Kamari Charlton, Former FSU Player, Faces Caning in Singapore
Filed under: Florida State

Prosecutors alleged Friday that calls made from Kamari Charlton's mobile phone in March deceived Mirko Prskalo into sending 17,145 Australian dollars ($16,853) in four payments. Prskalo was told that his nephew and family in Singapore urgently needed the money, court documents showed.
Police said they are also investigating Charlton for money laundering.
The 37-year-old Charlton was a reserve tight end and special teams player for Florida State University in the mid-1990s. He was arrested Sept. 1 when he attempted to leave the city-state 169 days after his 90-day social visit pass expired.
Staying in Singapore more than 90 days after the end of a visa is punishable with a maximum jail term of six months and at least three cane strokes. Cheating is punished with imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine.

Non-AQ Report: San Jose State's Resources Depleting
Filed under: Air Force, Arkansas State, Brigham Young, San Jose State, TCU

The Spartans have lost 12 starters -- 15 players total -- to season-ending injuries. MacIntyre started seven true freshmen and doesn't even have 50 scholarship players to put on the field.
"I have never seen anything like this in my life and I hope I never see anything like it again," MacIntyre said. "We are really, really thin. It's tough to compete."
The Spartans lost starting tailback Lamon Muldrow to a torn ACL against Boise State. Reserve linebacker Ryno Gonzalez (knee) and offensive tackle John Konye (neck) also were injured. Throughout the season, San Jose State has lost All-WAC first-team safety Duke Ihenacho (foot), starting linebacker Pompey Festejo (foot), starting center Robbie Reid (knee), starting tight end Ryan Otten (toe), starting LB Kyler O'Neal (knee), and starting DE Mohamed Marah (shoulder). Starting quarterback Jordan La Secla has been playing with bruised ribs.
