Offensive MVP: Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan. In six games, Shoelace has recorded three of the top six total offense performances in the history of college football's winningest program. And this in his first season as a starter. Only Nebraska's Taylor Martinez approaches Robinson in terms of thrills-per-snap.
Defensive MVP: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue. The 6-4, 263-pounder from Muncie, Ind., is intense and tenacious. He's intenacious! Kerrigan leads the Big Ten in tackles for loss (13.5), sacks (five) and forced fumbles (three).
Freshman of the Year: James White, RB, Wisconsin. Backing up the Big Ten's leading returning rusher (John Clay), White has averaged 120.3 yards per game and scored eight touchdowns in the Badgers' past three games.
Unit of the Year: Iowa's defense. In four of the Hawkeyes' five games, Norm Parker's defense has allowed seven or fewer points. In the 34-27 loss at Arizona, one touchdown came off a pick-six, another on a kickoff return and a third on an eight-yard touchdown "drive" following a turnover. Only one of the Wildcats' four touchdowns came via a legitimate (in this case, 72 yards) drive. Iowa is allowing a national-best 10.2 points per game. Subtract the two non-defense-allowed TDs in Tucson, and that number dips to 7.4 points per game.
