Will 'Hunger Games' Land Jennifer Lawrence On A-List?

'She is going to be on top of the celebrity charts for a few years now,' one expert tells MTV News.

Earning $19.8 million at midnight screenings and predictions of a $125 million weekend for "The Hunger Games" have essentially secured a future for the franchise, so now one of the more interesting questions coming out of the opening is: What does this mean for Jennifer Lawrence?

As the star of "The Hunger Games," Lawrence will inevitably be one of the people given credit for its huge success and, from there, move into the realm of "bankable" actresses. While headlining a huge blockbuster certainly helps bolster an actress' career prospects and offers for future projects, it will be Lawrence's incredible performance as Katniss Everdeen that secures her new status as a Hollywood A-lister and bona fide star.

With the now-guaranteed success of "The Hunger Games" under her belt, Lawrence's next project choices are going to be the ones that decide what kind of star she is, according to David Poland of Movie City News.

"She is going to be on top of the celebrity charts for a few years now, but it's easy to piss that away with a few bad choices," he said. "My sense is that she wants to be stimulated and not just take the money and run. So she could end up getting dozens of low-budget, high-quality films made or do 'one for them, one for me' or try to be the first Bond villainess. Doors are open. But she's young, and her identity is still forming."

Beginning that identity formation with "The Hunger Games" is a pretty solid start. Who didn't get goose bumps during the trailer when Lawrence broke away from the crowd at the Reaping to volunteer herself for the Games? "I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute." It's an incredibly memorable moment, and its resonance stems directly from how emotionally believable Lawrence is. For as contentious as her casting was, Lawrence silenced critics with two sentences.

At its core, "The Hunger Games" is a crowd-pleaser. It follows a strong female character, is full of action and arguably ends with the best possible outcome. There's a reason so many people of different demographics love it. As the hero of the story, Lawrence automatically becomes the person people associate the quality of the film with, and there's a good reason for that.

It's important to remember that when we're talking about Jennifer Lawrence, we're talking about "Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence," an honor she earned for a brutal role in "Winter's Bone."

There was never a question that Lawrence could act, and in the actual film of "The Hunger Games," she grounds a fantastical premise with a relatable and deeply realistic performance that goes beyond the usual requirements of a tentpole movie. Even though we're barely three months into 2012, based solely on the quality of her performance, Oscar consideration for Lawrence isn't entirely out of the question: She's that good.

With "The Hunger Games," Jennifer Lawrence has left behind the realm of "indie cred" and has entered rarified air: a highly bankable, capital A actor.

Lenny Kravitz Explains 'Subdued' Cinna In 'Hunger Games'

'All his expression comes out in his creations,' musician-turned-actor tells MTV News.

For those of us who've been following each and every production detail of "The Hunger Games," the casting process was perhaps the most intriguing element to dissect and overanalyze.

One of the most interesting casting announcements was Lenny Kravitz landing the role of sensitive, sympathetic stylist Cinna. When MTV News caught up with Kravitz recently, we asked the Grammy-winning musician-turned-actor to tell us how he ended up with the role.

"How hard [did I go] after it? I was on the other end of the phone, that's about it," he said. "I wish I had a great, struggling story, but I was working on my album when Gary Ross called and said, 'I'd like you to do this movie, "The Hunger Games," ' and so the first thing I had to ask was, 'What is "Hunger Games"?' because I honestly did not know. He told me and I downloaded the book that night, read it, called him back promptly the next day and said, 'Thank you very much, I'll be there.' "

Kravitz said Ross was inspired to contact him after seeing his performance in "Precious."

"He liked the performance in 'Precious' and thought that Nurse John and Cinna shared some similar qualities as far as being nurturing characters, and that sold him," Kravitz said. "So I was very fortunate."

What sold Kravitz on accepting the role was what also made a lot of us obsessive fans of "The Games": author Suzanne Collins' captivating story and relatable, respectable characters.

"Here I am, I'm recording all day in the studio, I'm tired, it's probably 2 in the morning, I'm finished. I pick up the computer, and already your eyes are tired, and I'm starting to read this thing. And I was so tired, and I didn't want to keep reading, I wanted to put it down, but I couldn't," he recalled. "It really kept my attention, the story kept building. That sold me right there: the storytelling. It really all comes down to that."

Although readers of the book came to know a more flamboyant version of the character as created by Collins, Kravitz and Ross decided to tone him down just a bit.

"One of my first questions to Gary Ross was, 'How far do you want to go with this?' and at the end of our conversation, we both agreed that it would be more interesting to make him more subdued, to play him more like [fashion icons] Yves Saint Laurent or Tom Ford, more classic," he said. "[Cinna] wears his waistcoats and his flats, and all his expression comes out in his creations. He's got his little bit of gold eye shadow, but yeah, he's pretty subdued."

Donald Trump Jr. may look a lot like his father, Donald Trump Sr., but they don't share all of the same opinions.

In a recent interview with Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin's The Six Pack radio show on Sirius XM, the 34-year-old revealed that he is pro gay marriage unlike his famous dad. "I'm totally for it. One of my best friends growing up was gay... it's never been an issue for me," he said.

The father of three young children jokingly even shared, "I think there was a time in my life, probably in college, that I wished every guy was gay because it meant more woman for me... That's always the way I thought about it.... If I have to suffer through marriage, why shouldn't they?"

Contrary to his beliefs, his uber-successful father shared last year on on Greta Van Susteren?s Fox News program: "I?m just not in favor of gay marriage." Perhaps the term, "like father, like son," does not always apply.

'Hunger Games' Actress Isabelle Fuhrman Wanted To Play Katniss

'I went in and actually auditioned for her, but I was too young,' recalls the 15-year-old, who plays District 2 tribute Clove instead.
By Amy Wilkinson

Photo: MTV News

Few film roles in recent memory have been as hotly contested as the bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine of Suzanne Collins' dystopian "Hunger Games."

A year ago, it seemed every working actress in Hollywood under the age of 25 was auditioning for the role of Katniss Everdeen — a part that eventually went to Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence. But director Gary Ross was able to utilize at least one would-be Katniss, namely Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays District 2's vicious tribute Clove.

"I saw myself as Katniss, but I think everyone does when they read the book, because that's the character that you related to so much because you're seeing the whole story through her eyes," Fuhrman told MTV News recently. "From page one, I was like, 'Oh, I want to be Katniss so badly.' That's what I wrote in [a] letter to Gary, how much I wanted to play Katniss. I went in and actually auditioned for her, but I was too young because I [was] 14."

Of course, Fuhrman said there are no hard feelings between her and Lawrence, whom she described as the "perfect" Katniss. In fact, landing the role of Clove came with the bonus of learning a new (potentially lethal) skill: knife throwing.

"I'm not going to be modest right now: I'm very good at it, and I'm very proud of that," Fuhrman said with a grin. "That was so hard to learn how to do, because there is a lot of physics involved with it. The knife goes three knife-lengths each rotation, and [you have to] how much force you want to put into it so it lands with the blade in versus the butt. It was difficult, to say the least, because I did training for about only two weeks before we started shooting, so I had to pick it up pretty quickly."

You can witness Fuhrman's nifty knife skills when "The Hunger Games" opens Friday.

'Katy Perry: Part Of Me' Concert Movie Won't Be 'Cheap'

Perry tells MTV News that fans will see 'exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.'
By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery

Katy Perry

Katy Perry shared a lot with us on Wednesday during "MTV First: Katy Perry," like how hard she worked to get in shape for her military-themed video for "Part of Me," when we might hear that duet with Rihanna, and some great new details about her upcoming 3-D concert movie.

"It's closing the chapter on Teenage Dream, but it's giving you such an inside perspective," Perry said when asked what fans will get out of the moviegoing experience this summer. "This film, you're going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you're going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything."

Perry went on to say that because she went through so much personally and professionally during her most recent concert tour, she wanted to share those experiences with her fans.

"That tour was so life-changing to me. I learned so much, I went through so much along the way," she said. "I'm not necessarily trying to prove anything to anyone, but not only will people really hands-down know me after they see this film, but you'll see me as the Dorothy wearing the red ruby slipper and at the end of it all I'm the [Wizard of] Oz as well."

Perry also promised that while there will be a few fun theatrics in the film to make the best use of the 3-D cameras, none of them will be of the clichéd or cheap variety.

"Listen, I've [worked on] most of this film for a very long time and the word 'cheap' was not in the vocabulary," she said. "But, hello, it's 3-D. You're going to get hit with a lot of sh--."

Tom Jones is a liar, according to Simon Cowell?

As the viewing war between Britain?s Got Talent and The Voice prepares to kick off this weekend, heated words are being exchanged between the shows? rival judges.

The patriarchs of the panels, Simon Cowell and Tom Jones, have been having a tte--tte via the press this week which began after the Welsh crooner (spotted outside the Radio One studios earlier) claimed the music mogul attempted to poach him for the X Factor on several occassions in the past, and he rejected him every single time.

But atthe press conference for BGT yesterday, Simon disputed that saying:

?The one thing I read about today, just to clear the record up, is that I had offered Tom Jones a role on one of my shows. I have met the guy once in Las Vegas and I think the offer he was thinking about was Opportunity Knocks.

?It wasn?t one of my shows, so he might have got his dates confused.?

And we thought Louis Walsh was a bitch.

'Hangover Part III' Due Next Summer

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are all onboard for the final film.

Nothing beats a classic movie trilogy. And while nobody is rushing to compare "The Hangover" to "Star Wars," director/producer Todd Phillips is aiming to end the hugely successful morning-after comedy franchise with a third and final chapter next summer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips confirmed on Thursday that "The Hangover Part III" will indeed wrap up the series when it's released next summer.

"We're going to surprise a lot of people with the final chapter we have planned," Phillips said. "It will be a fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions." The movie is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2013, hoping to capture some of the same box-office magic that the second installment grabbed when it launched on that same weekend in 2011 on its way to a massive $581.5 worldwide gross.

Additional good news came with the confirmation that after extensive negotiations, stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are all onboard for the third go-round. To date, the first two movies have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, a rarity for an R-rated comedy franchise. It was such an unexpected smash, in fact, that the Reporter noted that Warner Bros. studio didn't even sign the stars to option deals for sequels because no one expected the original 2009 film to gross more than $467 million. That resulted in the "wolfpack" trio getting "hefty" raises for the second film and a reported $15 million each for the third movie.

Phillips will again work on the script with "Part II" co-writer Craig Mazin, but he would not tip his hand as to where the third movie will take place. The magazine reported that a recent draft of the script indicated that it was set in Los Angeles and that it deviated from the "what happened to us last night?" formula of the first two films.

Cooper recently lent credence to the script speculation
when he revealed in a December interview, "We adhered to the formula in the second one, for those of you who've seen it, and the third one, which would close the whole sort of trilogy, which now it would be a trilogy — even though we thought we would never make a second one, let alone anybody see the first one — I think it will take place in Los Angeles and maybe not adhere to the structure. It might be different."

'The Hunger Games': The Reviews Are In!

Critics praise director Gary Ross' 'rich realization of the book's many worlds,' from District 12 to the Capitol as film hits theaters.
By Eric Ditzian

Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate

"It didn't surprise me, which was good," Jennifer Lawrence told MTV News of her first viewing of "The Hunger Games."

We suppose that makes sense, seeing as Lawrence is the face of the YA adaptation and that the responsibility of bringing heroine Katniss Everdeen to the screen is, dauntingly, hers alone. But we confess, it did surprise us. There were pitfalls aplenty for director Gary Ross. He could have succumbed to "Twilight" fever and played up the story's simmering-in-the-background love triangle. Cowering in awe or fear of the series' million of fans, he could have been excessively deferential to the source material, declining to expand the "Hunger Games" world beyond Katniss' first-person narration. Or, more simply, Ross could have just made a crappy movie.

None of that came to pass. Our worries were unfounded. In "Hunger Games," Ross has given us not only a kickass adaptation of a beloved book, but a kickass movie, full stop — an opinion shared not only by MTV News and Lawrence but by the vast majority of critics. Read on for a deep dive into "The Hunger Games" reviews.

The Story
"The greatest triumph of 'The Hunger Games' is Ross' rich realization of the book's many worlds: District 12 is painted as a reminiscent Southern mining town, haunting and vibrant; The Capitol is a utopian metropolis obsessed with design and flair; and the Hunger Games battleground is a sprawling forest peppered with 'Truman Show'-esque additions. ... For fans, the script hits every beat, a nearly note-for-note interpretation of author Suzanne Collins' original novel — but those unfamiliar shouldn't worry about missing anything. Ross knows his way around a sharp screenplay (he's the writer of 'Big,' 'Pleasantville' and 'Seabiscuit'), and he's comfortable dropping us right into the action." — Matt Patches, Hollywood.com

The Adaptation
" 'The Hunger Games' works almost better as a movie than a book; its pacing is slightly and effectively altered (the movie's a little more than half over by the time the Games actually start), its visuals striking, its close-in filming style parallels the intimacy of the first-person book. And it carefully walks a difficult line: How do you tell an essentially violent story without glorifying that violence?" — Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times

The Performances
"As Katniss, the extravagantly talented Jennifer Lawrence renders her character with surgical precision. Her defiance against the Hunger Games' overlords is instinctual. Her stoic composure in the face of danger doesn't come so naturally; when it slips we see the vulnerable girl clearly. Lawrence delivers an absolutely assured performance but she's hardly the whole show. As her fellow competitor Peeta, Josh Hutcherson moves persuasively along an arc that begins in conflicted feelings and deepens to friendship, loyalty and love. Donald Sutherland is subtle and sinister as President Snow. ... Stanley Tucci makes a vile, vampire-like impression as the Games' on-air master of ceremonies, sporting a navy blue 17th-century periwig and pearly, carnivorous teeth." — Colin Covert Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Dissenters
"Was it wrong to expect something more from 'The Hunger Games' other than pajama-party fodder? Suzanne Collins' dystopian sci-fi novel — the first in a trilogy — was rife with potential for a bold, daring entertainment that blended dark satire and social commentary with big action beats and thrills. Instead, what director Gary Ross opted for is an earnest, plodding thumb-sucker — a sugar-coated pacifier to appease the screaming hordes. This is a science-fiction movie of the blandest, most generic order, technically adequate but devoid of any wit or insight or anything more substantial and lasting than the cool image of Jennifer Lawrence wielding a wicked bow and arrow." — Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald

The Final Word
"Just wow. Since launching this site in 2009, I've been anxious and excited to someday see the film version of 'The Hunger Games.' I expected some level of 'Hollywood' — pointless changes, glamorization, fakeness, and always had that nagging worry that the movie would be a huge disappointment. After seeing it I can say ... this movie is amazing. Fans of the books and non-fans alike will be entertained, intrigued, and moved by Gary Ross' film version of Suzanne Collins' novel." — Kimmy West, Mockingjay.net

Dr. Dre To Produce Horror Movie 'Thaw'

Dr. Dre knows beats and he's one of the best at verbally eviscerating his enemies. But now the reclusive rap icon and music mogul is getting ready to enter a whole new arena of battle: the slasher movie.

According to Variety, Dre is set to co-produce the horror thriller "Thaw" for the Crucial Films movie banner. The script for the film will be written by Vik Weet, with a story focusing on an "ancient evil that emerges from the rapidly melting ice in the Yukon."

Variety noted that Weet curiously has also written another script for an as-yet-untitled thriller, to be directed by action veteran Renny Harlin about the investigation into the 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident, where nine experienced hikers were found dead in Russia's Ural Mountains.

Dre is no stranger to the movie business, with a résumé that includes acting appearances in the 1996 heist flick "Set It Off," as well as turns in the comedy "The Wash" and cop drama "Training Day." He announced a deal in 2007 to team with New Line Cinema's Crucial Films to produce a series of dark comedies and horror films and "Thaw" would be the first effort under that compact.

The move into movies is just one of the big deals Dre could be cooking up. According to reports, HTC, the company that bought a majority stake in his Beats By Dr. Dre brand of headphones line -- which he co-founded with Interscope boss and "American Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine— is in talks to acquire the popular online music service MOG.

And, of course, Dre is also still working on his long-promised Detox album. Rick Ross recently told MTV News that he had joined the likes of Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, 50 Cent and Nas as a contributor
 to the top secret project.

"We making some things happen, man— we just gonna see where the pieces fall," Ross said. "But we most definitely putting in major work.

Five Reasons Mister Rogers Was A Rock Star

'Mister Rogers & Me' director makes the case that the late TV star embodied rock and roll.
By Benjamin Wagner

"Mister Rogers & Me"
Photo: misterrogersandme.com

In 15 years at MTV News, I've interviewed some of my biggest rock heroes: Bono, The Edge, Michael Stipe, Neil Young. But it's a sensitive septuagenarian singing "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" who I count as my most rock and roll hero.

See, Mister Rogers summered in a modest, gray, shake-shingled house on the edge of Nantucket Island. My mother rented the cottage next door. So Mister Rogers — cardigans and Keds, King Friday and all — really was my neighbor.

I had an awesome, inspiring conversation with him just a few weeks after he taped the last of some 900-plus episodes of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" in 2001.

"Deep and simple," he said, "is far more essential than shallow and complex."

The phrase stuck, and inspired "Mister Rogers & Me," a documentary I wrote, produced, directed, shot, edited and scored with my brother, Christofer. Today, more than 10 years after meeting Mister Rogers, our film is premiering on DVD, iTunes and select PBS affiliates.

There was nary an amplifier, sampler or MacBook Air in sight when I met him or on any of the episodes he helmed over 30 years, but in some ways, Fred Rogers was one of the most rock and roll of anyone I've ever interviewed. To wit:

» He Was an Innovator. Rogers didn't play it safe after graduating college in 1951. He jumped into the brand-new world of television — the cutting-edge technology of his day — and took this radical innovation one step further by moving quickly into what would eventually become the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the original commercial-free torrent site.

» He Was Completely Himself, and Encouraged Us to Be the Same. In a world that tells us, "Buy This, Wear That, Be More," he told us, "There's no one else in the world like you. And you make today a special one by just being yourself." No shtick, no stylist, no pyro: He just was. That's cool.

» He Took On the Man. When the U.S. Senate wanted to pull stakes on his show, Mister Rogers hauled ass to Washington, D.C., to stare down the infamously cantankerous Senator John Pastore to win funding. In just a few minutes of savvy testimony that puts Pearl Jam, Dee Snider and George Clooney's attempts to shame, Rogers turned Pastore to Jell-O, won the day and saved not only the show, but also the network.

» He Invented "Punk'd." For a few months in the early '80s, Eddie Murphy's "Mister Robinson's Neighborhood" — a foul-mouthed, inner-city parody of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" — was the darling of "Saturday Night Live" and America. Murphy's "Kill My Landlord" one-upped (heck, 10-upped) Rogers' "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Rogers could have loathed Murphy's parody or ignored it outright. Instead, while visiting 30 Rock Studios one afternoon, he arranged to surprise the comedian: tiptoeing toward his dressing room, knocking on the door and saying, "Eddie? The Real Mister Rogers is here!" Murphy was flustered. Rogers was amused.

'Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Trailer: Five Things We Want To See

Now that we've seen the 10-second teaser, here's our wish list for the trailer, in 'Twilight' Tuesday.

All right, "Twilight" fans: Now that we've had our curiosity piqued and our hearts made all aflutter via the release of the brand-new "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer sneak peek, it's time to take a break from re-watching it 20 more times and think about what didn't make the 10-second spot that we hope we see in the full-length trailer debuting in front of "The Hunger Games" later this week.

This week's "Twilight" Tuesday is dedicated to our "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" trailer wish list, featuring thoughtful commentary from one of our favorite experts, Kallie Mathews, webmistress of TwilightSeriesTheories.com.

Arm Wrestling and Other Bella-as-a-Vampire Scenes
So Bella is a vampire now. Hopefully that doesn't surprise anyone at this point, since everyone who saw "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" got a little sneak peek of those freaky-colored eyes of hers. As such, we should see a whole new side of Bella in this movie, including an arm wrestling match with Emmett. "I am hoping to see some vampire action in the full trailer," Mathews said. "There are some great training scenes from the book I hope they include, as well as some great cottage scenes with Bella and Edward! I expect to see lots of Bella as a vampire, and I'm OK with that!"

A Lee Pace Sighting
I've mentioned my enthusiasm for the new castmembers before, particularly my affection for Lee Pace, but it is worth repeating until more people appreciate him. Pace, whom you might recognize from his excellent work on the short-lived TV series "Pushing Daisies" or Tarsem's "The Fall," plays American nomadic vamp Garrett in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," and although he isn't one of the major players in the film, his character still has a nice arc and I'm dying to see more of him.

Mackenzie Foy as Renesmee Cullen
Remember when Edward and Bella had a baby? Of course you do; how can anyone forget that graphic scene? Anyway, baby Renesmee grows up really fast in the second film, and she's being played by beautiful young actress Mackenzie Foy, who has already told us a few adorable things about working with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. I would very much like to see her in action in the trailer.

A Shirtless Pattinson or Lautner
I'm sure there is a highbrow, intellectual approach to take here, but instead, I'm going to channel my inner teenage girl and hope that we get to see some shirtlessness from Pattinson and Lautner. Trailers are all about enticing audiences to come see the movie, so why not serve up some gratuitous shots of the film's very handsome men for the very dedicated fans? "I have a feeling we will see tight close-ups of the Cullens, a shirtless werewolf and lots of trees," Mathews predicted. "Plus, you know there will be some great one-liners!"

Appropriately Angsty Background Music
In addition to the fanfare that surrounds the film's stars and the actual movie itself, there is plenty of enthusiasm for the various "Twilight" soundtracks that have been released over the years, so much so that certain bands have been rediscovered by making the cut. I'd like to hear either a familiar favorite, like Sleeping at Last's "Turning Page," or a brand-new and soon-to-be hit song over which we can swoon for a few months.

What would you like to see in the new trailer? Let us know in the comments below, or tweet me @karawarner!

'21 Jump Street' Arrests Box Office With $35 Million Debut

Big-screen adaptation of '80s TV show enjoyed the highest debut for a comedy set in high school.
By Ryan J. Downey

"21 Jump Street" arrested audiences over the weekend to the tune of a cool $35 million at the box office. The action comedy, which was the only widely released new film in theaters and the only movie in the top five to enjoy mostly positive reviews, easily took the #1 spot. A great marketing campaign, two well-liked stars and a familiar premise derived from the late-'80s cop show all contributed to the movie's success, according to industry watchers.

"Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" was #2 with $22.8 million, officially passing "Horton Hears a Who!" with its $158.4 million-and-climbing haul. Disney's big-budget "John Carter" was #3, dropping 55 percent in its second weekend, earning $13.5 million for a total of $53.1 million. Found-footage party movie "Project X" was #4 on the box-office scorecard with $4 million for a $48.1 million total. Eddie Murphy's "A Thousand Words" rounded out the top five with just $3.7 million for a $12.1 million total. The box-office bomb carried a startling 0 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer" at press time, meaning not a single critic has reviewed the film positively.

Will Ferrell's "Casa de Mi Padre" and Jason Segel's "Jeff, Who Lives at Home" both opened in limited release to respectable (if not gangbuster) per-screen business. Ferrell's Spanish-language spaghetti-western comedy, which co-stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Genesis Rodriguez and Diego Luna, was #9 with $2.2 million. "Casa" was in 382 theaters, which was roughly 170 more than "Jeff, Who Lives at Home" (by comparison, "21 Jump Street" played at more than 3,000 theaters). "Jeff" is the latest movie from mumblecore veterans Mark and Jay Duplass, who directed "21 Jump Street" co-star Jonah Hill as the title character in "Cyrus."

"Jump Street" enjoyed the highest opening ever for a comedy set in high school, surpassing Hill's own "Superbad" ($33.05 million). The 28-year-old earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor thanks to his dramatic turn in "Moneyball," and co-star Channing Tatum's "The Vow" made well over $100 million earlier this year. "21 Jump Street" (in which the pair play cops who go undercover in a high school) has an 87 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "Completely abandoning earnest teenagers-in-crisis melodrama in favor of crude, aggressive comedy, this '21 Jump Street' is an example of how formula-driven entertainment can succeed," wrote The New York Times' A.O. Scott.

"21 Jump Street" is a comedic take on the Fox crime drama that ran from 1987 to 1991. The movie's opening was stronger than many television adaptations, beating flicks like "The Dukes of Hazzard" ($30.7 million) and "The A-Team" ($25.7 million). On Saturday, Variety reported that Sony is pursuing a sequel with both stars returning."Jump Street" also stars Ice Cube, Dave Franco, Brie Larson and Rob Riggle and features music from Devo frontman and "Yo Gabba Gabba!" co-star Mark Mothersbaugh.

"The Hunger Games" is expected to dominate the box office this weekend.

'Hunger Games' Star Liam Hemsworth Is 'Team Haymitch'

'Woody Harrelson is one of my favorite actors, and I was really, really excited to see Haymitch come to life,' Aussie actor tells MTV News.

As painful as it has been for us "Hunger Games" fans to wait for the film's release, imagine how anxious the stars themselves have been to see it.

We've heard how Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson reacted to seeing the finished film for the first time, and now it's time to hear what co-star Liam Hemsworth had to say after his first viewing.

"It was amazing just to see all the different actors and what they've done with it," Hemsworth told MTV News recently. "Woody Harrelson is one of my favorite actors, and I was really, really excited to see Haymitch come to life. He's awesome. I'm Team Haymitch all the way; I think he's amazing.

"The movie is intense from beginning to end, and it's powerful," Hemsworth added about the finished product. "You have this girl who gives so much hope and courage to everyone, and Jennifer is the perfect person to play it. She pulled it off perfect."

After joking with the Aussie actor about how his brother, "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth, helped him prepare for the initial audition, we asked Liam how he approached his character knowing that, while he doesn't have a lot of screen time, his role in Katniss' life is vital.

"It does add a little pressure. It's always harder when you're coming in for smaller amounts and you have to convey everything that needs to be conveyed in small moments, but the writing was that good that it wasn't hard," Hemsworth said of maximizing his screen time. "The director was that good and Jennifer was amazing, so it was all kind of already there."

'Hunger Games' Hair Stylist Talks Haymitch's 'Disheveled' Locks

Linda Flowers tells MTV News Woody Harrelson's blond wig 'gives his character a little bit of a push.'
By Amy Wilkinson

Woody Harrelson in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate

Stylist Linda Flowers had run with Vince's "Entourage," played with "Angels & Demons" and even primped a "Social Network" tycoon for his profile picture, but the Hollywood veteran took on her hairiest project yet with the eye-popping adaptation of "The Hunger Games." As the film's hair department head, Flowers, in harmony with director Gary Ross' vision, crafted the iconic, and frequently candy-colored, 'dos of Effie Trinket and more than 500 Capitol citizens. We hopped on the phone with Flowers to chat about the meticulous mentor's look, Woody Harrelson's unconventional Haymitch style and where exactly all that hair went after Ross yelled, "Cut!"

MTV News: What was your experience reading "The Hunger Games" for the first time? Did you start formulating looks as you read?

Linda Flowers: When I read it, I fell in love with it, and I read all three of them very quickly. It's such a great story, and it's gonna appeal to so many different demographics. Anytime you get to read a book with colorful characters and they've got pink hair and blue hair, I'm in. My imagination was going crazy. I mean, how often do you get to put pink hair on somebody?

MTV: What did you and Gary discuss during your initial conversation?

Flowers: Gary's main concern was with all the colored hair. He wanted people to take the Capitol seriously, and he wanted the looks to be couture. So when you're talking about orange and aqua and pink and blue hair, the first place people go is very young, and they think it is more a street look or an urban look for kids. But the challenge was to put it on all age groups and make it look couture.

MTV: Logistically, this had to be a grand-scale production. Describe a typical day on set.

Flowers: When we were at the peak of all of our Capitol people, I had 45 hairdressers working because everyone had to go through hair and makeup. Each person had an individual look. When you do period movies, the hair is already set, the period has already been set, but there was nothing established for the look of this because it's in the future. Each person that sat down, a look had to be created for them even if they were, like, #500 on the call sheet. So that was a real challenge, and plus, not just the hairdressers to do their hair, but we had to have a clean-up crew come in when we wrapped to take everyone's hair, wigs and pieces off to reset them and get them ready for the next day. So it was an around-the-clock deal because we have 30 to 40 people doing hair and 10 to 15 to come in when we wrapped and take everyone down so the hairdressers could go home and sleep to get ready for the next day.

MTV: Who had the most time-consuming look?

Flowers: It was Effie, but the good thing was I could do Effie's hair when she wasn't in the trailer. Her hair definitely took the most time. From start to finish it was about 45 minutes, and I'm really fast. I constructed it slowly. She's one of those people who's so completely and purposefully put together that her wig would be an accessory just like a purse or a pair of shoes. So she has three wigs in the movie, and we're going to have more for her in the next movie.

She wears three different looks, and they're all the same shape. I picked a classic shape, which has a '30s finger-wave bob, and I took that and I really brushed it out, but it kept the finger waves, and I gave it a lot of volume. And then I took really heavily textured hair and put it in between the layers of her finger waves.

MTV: It sounds like you're already planning ahead for "Catching Fire."

Flowers: Yes. I prepped five or six wigs, and she only wore three in the first one, so we do have some for the second one, and I will prep more. I think everyone was afraid; they didn't want people to be taken out of the movie with it being too over-the-top or too colorful, so that's why I chose a pastel palette to start her off with in the movie. When you see her in the Capitol, it gets brighter and she gets a little more extreme.

MTV: The hairstyle that's probably raised the most eyebrows is Woody Harrelson's Haymitch look, which he fashioned after his brother. What did you think when he approached you with the concept?

Flowers: Well, he originally wanted it longer. He brought in a photo of his brother, and his brother looks just like him with the wig on. It was really what he wanted, and then, you know, I showed it to Gary, and he looked at it. He goes, "You know, I think that would be a good look for him, we just need to make it a little shorter." It looks like the period. The District 12 people kind of have a '30s-period haircut because they're very poor and they work in the mines. It kinda looked like that but really grown out.

The thing, too, when you're trying to give a character a kind of character look — someone that has hair like he does — you can make it a little dirty and a little disheveled and make it look like you haven't shampooed it recently, and it gives his character a little bit of a push. When you have no hair, you can't really give that push. You can't really see a passage of time; he's normal, then he's drunk and he woke up, and he's hungover. You can articulate that and express that through the hair. With no hair, you really can't express that. It really helped me help him with his character.

MTV: I can only imagine what some random warehouse in North Carolina must look like with hundreds of wigs lying around.

Flowers: You gotta remember, we used over 500 wigs in this movie. There is a warehouse full of trunks with wigs and stuff like that. I keep the cast wigs in a more secure — I don't keep them in a warehouse. They're actually in a very secure place that Lionsgate has.

Choosing a baby name can be tricky, so it?s no surprise that Jessica Simpson and fianc Eric Johnson were, until recently, at an impasse about what to call their soon-to-be born daughter. ?They tossed around a lot of names, including some wacky ones like Zinfandel, but couldn?t agree on anything,? a family friend confides.

Now, the pair has come to an understanding, and In Touch ? which was first to break the news both of Jessica?s pregnancy and of the baby?s sex ? can exclusively reveal the unusual (for a girl) moniker. ?They?re going to call her Maxwell, Maxi for short,? the friend says. Maxwell is Eric?s middle name, and also his beloved grandma?s maiden name. ?Jessica wanted a name with meaning.?

'Snow White' Trailer Focuses On Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart Rivalry

Clip show Theron's cold-hearted Queen Ravenna on the hunt for Stewart's sword-wielding Snow White.
By Jocelyn Vena

"Snow White and the Huntsman" is certainly the antidote to "Mirror Mirror." For every giggle that Julia Roberts throws about in the trailer for "Mirror," Charlize Theron (Queen Ravenna) throws a cold stare and an even colder threat in a new "Show White" trailer released Monday (March 19).

Bathed in dark images and darker themes, this "Snow White" blockbuster focuses on the bloodthirsty queen in her hunt for revenge and eternal power. The key to continue her tyranny and remain the fairest of them all is Snow White's (Kristen Stewart) heart. Enter the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), who has been ordered to get that heart, or else.

With the classical premise laid out, the trailer is full of a sword-wielding, chainmail-clad Snow White, out to use her innate good to destroy the queen's evil. The trailer focuses on the good-versus-evil plot while teasing the film's eye-catching effects and landscapes. Where Ravenna brings destruction, Snow brings light, love and life.

Much of Stewart's role in the trailer relies on her ability to look both tough and vulnerable. "I see what she sees," Stewart's Snow reveals at one point. "I can kill her." The trailer closes with Ravenna pledging, "Let them come," as her evil cackle plays out the trailer.

When Theron and Stewart stopped by the "Today" show Monday (March 19), Theron talked about reviving fairy tales for modern audiences. "I think these stories, thematically, bleed into a lot of stuff that's relevant," she said. "So I'm not shocked that we're having an outbreak of a lot of these kinds of classic fairy tales being retold. There's a way to do them in different worlds, and I think that's the case with this. They were definitely made for very specific audiences and very different audiences."

So, was Stewart shocked by turning "Snow White" into an action film? "It is [an action movie]. It had a reason," she told the "Today" show on Monday. "It never felt like it was a movie where you were just trying to have a strong girl character be badass. You want to join the cause, like any good script you read. I believe in it so much."
